Crime and Trauma Scene Biohazard Remediation
Statistically, residents of the United States are more likely to be exposed to crime through media coverage or through personal contact discussion.  There are those that unfortunately are directly affected by crime and trauma events.

According to the FBI Supplementary Homicide Reports from 1976 to 2005, homicides are most often committed with guns.  And the gun most used in a homicide is a handgun.  Teens and young adults victimized by homicide are more likely to have a gun involved than homicides of persons in other age groups.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) mission is to collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government.  A series of statistics from the BJS that is very disturbing are those associated with weapon use in violent crime.
In 2005, 24% of violent crime incidents had a weapon present.  Also in 2005, violent crime offenders had or used a weapon in 48% of all robberies, 22% of all aggravated assaults, and 7% of all rapes and sexual assaults.

In the same year, 76% of homicides in Maryland were committed by a gun.  Out of the 552 homicides in Maryland in 2005, the remaining 24% were committed with a knife or other weapon.

New York had entirely different percentages in the 874 homicides in 2005.  With 58% of homicides committed with a gun in New York, the remaining 42% of homicides in 2005 had statistical differences to those committed in Maryland.

The Baltimore police departments recorded homicides per 100,000 population in 2004 more than any other jurisdiction in the United States.  One of the more safe jurisdictions to live in is Long Island, a portion of the greater New York City metropolitan area.  In 2005 the crime rate in this New York suburban area was less than half the national average.

New Jersey had similar percentages in the 417 homicides in 2005.  With 66% of homicides committed with a gun in New Jersey, the remaining 34% of homicides in 2005 had statistical similarities to those committed in New York.

In 2006, Washington, D.C. FBI statistics rank the city number 18 in its rate of violent crime with 1446 crimes per 100,000 population.

Urban areas such as Baltimore, New York, Newark, and all of Washington, D.C. in these states held the majority of these crime scenes with suburban and rural areas holding lower victimization rates.

Crime Statistics:
1.) Baltimore – Baltimore with a population of 639,929 in 2010 saw there robbery crime incidents drop from 3,707 in 2009 to 3,336 in 2010, this 10% decrease as the largest drop Baltimore saw in the comparisons on 2009 to 2010 crime rates. Right beneath this 10% reduction fell violent crime, property crime, and burglary.

2.) Salisbury – Salisbury had a 2010 population of 30,343 and the community witnessed a significant decrease in robbery rates from 2009 with 79 incidents and fell to 45 incidents in 2010, about a 43% reduction. Salisbury also saw their burglary rates reduce by 20%.

3.) Germantown – Germantown in 2010 had a population of 86,395 witnessed all of there crime rates decrease. The largest reduction was seen in the aggravated assault incidents, which was a near 35%; decrease starting in 2009 with 113 crimes and falling to 74 incidents in 2010. Alongside this reduction was Germantown’s Auto Theft crime rate decrease of 22%. http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/poltmpl.asp?url=/content/pol/media/crimestats.asp
