Statistically, residents of the United States are more likely to be exposed to crime through media coverage or through personal contact discussion.  There are those that unfortunately are directly affected by crime and trauma events.

According to the FBI Supplementary Homicide Reports from 1976 to 2005, homicides are most often committed with guns.  And the gun most used in a homicide is a handgun.  Teens and young adults victimized by homicide are more likely to have a gun involved than homicides of persons in other age groups.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) mission is to collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government.  A series of statistics from the BJS that is very disturbing are those associated with weapon use in violent crime.
In 2005, 24% of violent crime incidents had a weapon present.  Also in 2005, violent crime offenders had or used a weapon in 48% of all robberies, 22% of all aggravated assaults, and 7% of all rapes and sexual assaults.

According to the 2004 United States Census, Florida ranks 10th in the nation in regards to violent crime.  There were over 5 homicides in Florida per 100,000 population in 2004.  In additional to a high homicide rate in Florida, there were 38 rapes, over 170 robberies, and almost 500 assaults per 100,000 population.

In 2006, the Department of Justice's FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division reported Orlando had 4,300 violent crimes including 49 murders, a record number since 36 in 1982. Crime in Orlando has been up 329% since 2006.
Urban areas such as Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and Tallahassee in Florida held the majority of these crime scenes with suburban and rural areas holding lower victimization rates.
